October 13, 2009: The Cat Adoption Team’s Cat Food Bank expanded to provide cat food to Meals-On-Wheels clients served by the Beaverton Loaves & Fishes Center. This pilot program brings together CAT, Loaves & Fishes Centers and Washington County Disability Aging and Veteran Services. In September, 240 pounds of cat food was delivered to 16 Beaverton Loaves & Fishes Center homebound clients who receive Meals-On-Wheels.

Meghan Evans and Doug Evans, a veterinarian, distribute a month's supply of hay to horse owners throughout Central Oregon; owners may reapply if needed. Owners must allow spontaneous site visits to insure that their horses are being properly fed.

The Pongo Fund Pet Food Bank opened to the entire community on Sunday, November 8, 2009. Open 2nd and 4th Sunday each month from 12 pm until 2:30 pm, first come first-served basis as available. 910 NE Martin Luther King Boulevard, directly across from the Oregon Convention Center. The Pongo Fund provides quality dog and cat food to animals living in Portland’s homeless and transitional communities. The Pongo Fund also provides pet food to organizations assisting those in need. Larry has regularly distributed pet food at Potluck in the Park, a weekly free meal at O'Bryant Square in downtown Portland.

Beginning May 1, 2010: Willamette Humane Society's Pet Food Bank is designed to help keep pets in homes by offering food assistance to area dog and cat owners experiencing temporary financial hardship. Food is distributed the first Saturday of each month (beginning May 1, 2010) 10am to 12 noon at the shelter (located at 4246 Turner Rd. SE, Salem, Oregon) on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Anyone picking up food will be asked to fill out a short form about their pets and financial situation and to show proper identification (driver’s license or other ID) each time food is picked up. The Pet Food Bank is not intended to feed feral cats or stray animals.

The Central Oregon Association of Realtors and Central Oregon Meals on Wheels are teaming up for We All Love Our Pets, a monthlong pet food drive.
Beginning Tuesday, donations of treats, canned food and 1- to 5-pound bags of pet food can be dropped off at locations throughout Central Oregon. The donations will then be delivered to Meals on Wheels recipients with pets, to keep the companion animals well fed and healthy.

Multnomah County employees hold pet food drive

As the recession deepens, many families are forced to make the choice between keeping their family pets and paying their bills because they simply cannot afford the cost of pet food and care. To help prevent families from having to make that difficult choice, Multnomah County employees are holding a pet food drive as part of a larger June 20 [2009] event sponsored by the Multnomah County Animal Shelter, Compassion Connect, and the Portland Animal Welfare Team (PAW Team). They hope to gather dog and cat food, dog and cat collars, flea treatments, microchips, and dog treats, as well as dog and cat toys.
Donations are accepted at the Multnomah Building at 501 SE Hawthorne and at the County Animal Shelter in Troutdale. You can find other donation locations by calling Robyn Luchs at 503-789-7035.
From 9:00am to 4:00 p.m. on June 20, Compassion Southeast will be offering basic pet health exams, vaccinations, microchips, and free pet food, in addition to the free medical, dental, and chiropractic care, eye exams, haircuts, and more they usually offer to low income families.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
ASPCA Emergency Hay Support Grants
Groups can apply for one of two types of Hay Support grants:
Direct support to help in providing feed for the horses, ponies, mules and burros under the care of 501(c)(3) organizations involved in providing rescue or sanctuary
Program support for organizations providing hay to needy equine owners in their communities; that is, who are running a type of equine food bank.

HSUS Update: May 4, 2009
Unfortunately due to financial constraints, the Foreclosure Pets Fund has been temporarily suspended.
The remaining funds will be awarded based on those applications that we have received to date, however we are no longer accepting new applicants.
Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) - Foreclosure Pets Program Guidelines
Offers grants of $500 to $2000 to animal shelters, non-sheltered rescue/adoption groups and animal care and control agencies to help establish, expand, or publicize services or programs that assist individuals in caring for their pets during this economic downturn. Preference will be given to organizations that have or create a formal Plan of Cooperation with a local community partner such as the American Red Cross, a food bank, or other community service agency.
